The New York League of Humane Voters (NYLHV), the state's largest and most influential lobby for animal welfare, announced today that it has endorsed Bill de Blasio for New York City Public Advocate. The current Public Advocate, Betsy Gotbaum, is retiring.
"NYLHV is proud to endorse Bill de Blasio for NYC Public Advocate. As a member of the City Council, Bill has been a friend and ally on numerous animal protection issues. He's a very smart guy that listens, a hard worker, and he'll be a terrific advocate for animals and people alike," said John Phillips, NYLHV's executive director.
In announcing the endorsement, NYLHV cited de Blasio's support for the following bills: Intro 13, the pets in housing bill; Intro 389, the bill to ban the use of elephants in the circus; Reso. 2049, NYC's Foodprint Project, which encourages more plant-based & local eating; and Intro 545, to restrict prolonged tethering of dogs. de Blasio also supports a pilot program for the NYLHV & NYCLASS eco-tourism proposal, to see how a fleet of green replica antique cars in Central Park could help horses and generate the jobs and tourist activity that is currently supported by the horse-drawn carriage industry.
Upon learning of the endorsement, de Blasio had this to say: "I am very touched and proud to have the endorsement of the New York League of Humane Voters. NYLHV members are out there every day doing effective, much-needed work to protect animals, and I look forward to continuing to work together on these important issues."
